Zambo Buchanan, now performing as Zzambo and formerly known as Tafari, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, to Joan Porteous and legendary reggae artist Big Youth, a pioneer of the dancehall style and a foundational influence on hip-hop. Growing up immersed in music, he describes his journey as a balance of life and artistry, inspired by his father’s legacy and icons like Tupac, Sade, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Dennis Brown, Jay Z, and Bob Marley. “Inspired by a musical father, it is only right for a son to follow tradition,” he says, embodying the fearless spirit of his original stage name, Tafari, meaning “Fearless One.”

Zzambo’s musical journey began in the early 2000s, transitioning from a reggae rapper to a versatile artist blending reggae, hip-hop, R&B, and pop. His unique sound, developed with producers like Noah Mason, Jason Gilbert, Tony Kelly, and Supa Dups, has made him a standout in an industry often hesitant to experiment with reggae fusions. Early in his career, as Tafari, he toured extensively with Big Youth across the United States, UK, Europe, and South America, honing his dynamic stage presence.

His breakout single, “Money in My Pocket,” marked early success, followed by albums Rud3 Love and Desire Fulfilled, both reaching the top ten on the iTunes reggae charts in the United States.
