Teacha Dee From Chalkboards to Sound Systems

Traditionally, Jamaican educators were bound to chalkboards, whiteboards, and classrooms—not microphones and amplifiers. Pursuing both education and music was frowned upon, and the idea of breaking into the international reggae scene without a local buzz in Jamaica was considered nearly impossible.

Yet, Damion Darrel Warren, better known as Teacha Dee, defied the odds. While working as a teacher, he began recording and performing reggae music, and in 2006 his breakthrough came with a string of internationally acclaimed songs including Smuggling Weed, Reggae Souljahs, and Smoke and Fly. Another highlight, Party Day, reached the #1 spot twice in 2014 on the German Reggae Charts, cementing his status on the European reggae scene. His single Rastafari Way also made waves, spending 14 days on Beatport’s Top 100 Dub/Reggae Chart and peaking at #44.

Early Life and Education

Born on September 21, 1980, in Bath, Westmoreland, Jamaica, Teacha Dee grew up in a small district five miles from Savanna-la-Mar, the parish capital. He attended Manning’s School, one of Jamaica’s oldest and most respected high schools, before enrolling at Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College in Montego Bay, where he trained to become an educator.

First Tours and Career Transition

In 2011, Teacha Dee embarked on his first European tour during a paid leave from teaching. His debut at ReggaeJam Festival in Germany introduced him to a new fan base, and his performance in the dancehall tent was widely praised. He followed up with more shows across Germany and Holland, gaining momentum and recognition.

By May 2012, he officially resigned from teaching to pursue music full time. Within just two years, he had headlined major European reggae festivals, including Spring Reggae Fest in Le Mans, France, alongside Echo Minott and Skarra Mucci.

Festival Highlights and Mixtape Success

Teacha Dee became a familiar face on the European festival circuit. At ReggaeJam 2013, he appeared as a headliner, and in 2015, he returned for another standout performance listed among the festival highlights alongside legends such as David Rodigan, Bitty McLean, Anthony B, and Ken Boothe. That same year, he released his first official mixtape, “Rasta Ting”, showcasing his versatility and conscious message.

Discography and Collaborations

Since his debut 20-track album Reggae Souljahs: Beating Babylon with Music in 2011, Teacha Dee has recorded more than 74 official singles. He has collaborated with reggae and dancehall veterans including Perfect Giddimani, Utan Green, Echo Minott, and Skarra Mucci, and has shared stages with many of the genre’s top acts.

He has worked with prominent producers and labels such as House of Riddim, Dub Inc, Rootdown Records, Pow Pow Movement, Jugglerz Records, Oneness Records, Greezzly Productions, and Giddimani Records.

International Recognition

In 2016–2017, Teacha Dee’s singles Rastafari Way and Jah Jah Is Calling earned significant attention. Both tracks gained strong traction on YouTube—over 200,000 views for Jah Jah Is Calling and 120,000 views for Rastafari Way—with support from respected platforms like BBC 1Xtra, where Sir David Rodigan featured Rastafari Way on his show.

Teacha Dee is known for writing simple, catchy anthems about deep subjects—spirituality, love, philosophy, social issues, and theology.
