Jordan Joel Phillips, known by her stage name J Capri, was born on December 24, 1991, in Kingston, Jamaica. As the daughter of the talented Jamaican DJ Mr. Murphy (Kenneth Phillips) and cosmetologist Oradell Carwin, J Capri was surrounded by creativity and music from a young age. Her musical journey began when she was just six years old, realizing her passion for music early in life.

J Capri’s talent was first recognized at St. Richards Primary School during a singing competition. Although she was nervous and did not win, her performance left a lasting impression on many, confirming her dedication to pursuing a musical career. She continued her education at Wolmer’s Trust High School for Girls, where her experiences further shaped her resolve to follow her passion. The school had a significant impact on her outlook on life and people, fostering her potential despite her not being an A+ student.

Musical Training and Development:

At 17, J Capri enrolled at EXED Community College to study Performing Arts, and later attended the Edna Manley School of the Visual and Performing Arts. It was here that she honed her skills and was inspired by her peers and mentors in music, fashion, art, and dance. During her first year at Edna Manley, she met Tarik Johnston, popularly known as Rvssian, the CEO of Head Concussion Records, who would play a pivotal role in her career.

Career Breakthrough:

J Capri’s big break came when Rvssian encouraged her to write and perform her first dancehall song. This collaboration led to the production of “Nicest Feeling” with Chan Dizzy, which was well-received, especially in Trinidad and Tobago and Florida, amassing over a million views on YouTube.

Her rise to fame accelerated with the release of “Whine and Kotch” featuring Charly Black. The song topped iTunes charts in seven countries, including the Netherlands, France, Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. The success of “Whine and Kotch” opened doors for international tours, including performances in Paris, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Trinidad and Tobago just four months after the song’s release.

Continued Success and Collaborations:

To sustain the momentum, Rvssian facilitated another hit collaboration for J Capri, this time with dancehall star Konshens. Their track wreaked havoc on radio stations in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Martinique. The accompanying music video quickly gained significant traction online, amassing over 98,000 views in less than a month.

Influences and Aspirations:

J Capri aspired to be the most versatile female artist out of Jamaica, drawing influence from a diverse range of artists including her father, her cousin Chad Phillips (Dahj), Patra, Vybz Kartel, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, and Beyoncé. Her unique blend of influences and her ability to traverse different musical genres set her apart as a dynamic and promising artist in the dancehall scene.

Legacy and Impact:

J Capri was often compared to Patra and was seen as the future of dancehall music. Her music continues to inspire and resonate with fans around the world, and her impact on the genre is remembered fondly.

Tragic End:

Tragically, J Capri’s burgeoning career was cut short after a car accident. She passed away on December 4, 2015, leaving a lasting legacy in the dancehall community. Despite her untimely death, her contributions to music and her potential as a groundbreaking artist are celebrated by many.
