Dancehall stalwart Chico took a hiatus from the dancehall scene after being in the forefront in the late 1990s to early 2000s, making remarkable strides at the time.
Though he took a sabbatical for personal reasons, Chico still managed to get some songs done throughout the years.
However, it is “Every Man” that is going to reintroduce him to present day listeners, both old and new.
"Every Man", released on June 24, 2024, was written by Craig Watson and produced by Watson and his business partner Phillip Lindsay for their label, Unit X Productions. The beat was made by Wesley Osbourne from the UK and the track mixed by him as well. While new on the scene, Unit X Productions believes they have what it takes to help Chico reclaim his place in Dancehall.
"Chico is one of the artists that we grew up listening to and so his musical style and content aligns with our artistic vision. Also this song needed someone with strong vocal ability and since Chico has that, he turned out to be the perfect choice," explained Watson when asked why they chose to work with Chico.
"When the production company was in its infancy, we were introduced to Chico by a mutual friend. We all became friends and have kept the link throughout the years," Watson continued.
Chico’s vocal talent has not waned in the least bit, sounding even more impressive than ever on the track, "Every Man". The composition and production is impeccable and lyrically relatable. Chico has added his old-school style to this new aged beat, giving listeners a refreshing sound to vibe to.
"All producers, whether they are established or newcomers, have to start somewhere, and Phillip and Craig’s fresh ideas have reignited my enthusiasm to collaborate on this project. The topic is a common theme in today's culture. This is reality, so I went ahead and recorded the track, and the rest is history," Chico stated.
He further went on to say that "the song was written by Craig Watson from Unit X Productions. Like many other artists in the industry that take songs written by others, I focused on my strengths in performing the song and making it my own."
"Every Man" is available on all streaming platforms and has already been included in rotation on various radio stations in Jamaica and the US.
